Puppy Found Wrapped in plastic bag is a Teacup Yorkie

Josh Miller was hurrying into the Fortinos supermarket at Lawrence Square Tuesday afternoon when he noticed there was something “yelping” from inside a nearby garbage can. As he approached the can, he realized the noise was coming from a plastic bag. At first, he thought it may have been a raccoon or a squirrel. “I saw that the bag was kind of moving,” Miller said in an interview. “I was a little freaked out.” He attempted to free the animal and found it was wrapped in five separate plastic bags, each one tightly knotted. It was around 3 p.m. on Tuesday — with the temperature nearing 30 C — and the bags felt “boiling hot.” Once Miller tore through them, he found a three-month old Yorkshire Terrier inside. The female puppy was dehydrated, on t...

Abandoned puppy with broken legs found at Pittsburgh animal shelter is recovering after surgery

An 11-week-old old Yorkie puppy is recovering from surgery after being found abandoned with two broken legs at the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society on the North Side. Pins were inserted into the dog, now named Laney, to help her legs heal. Officials said the type of break she suffered is typical of a jump or a fall. Dr. Anthony Pardo, who performed the surgery, said Laney will wear splints for four to five weeks. “During that time, she’s going to be crate-confined, have bandage changes, and hopefully she will be adoptable after that,” Pardo said Thursday. Anyone who wants to adopt Laney should contact the Humane Society at www.wpahumane.org or 412-321-4625. Laney was coming out of sedation when she was found Tuesday, according to the shelter. Officials believe the type...

Maryville couple taken in by Craigslist puppy scam

A young Maryville couple spent hundreds of dollars for a new puppy, hoping it would be joy to their family, but they got nothing in return. They had fallen victim to an advance payment scam. Amy and Trey Minnear discovered a puppy for sale in an Craigslist ad. The ad said a 12-week-old puppy was guaranteed, was up to date on its shots and, best of all, wasn’t expensive. The Minnears said they were interested because the dog was supposedly in Greeneville, not far from their home. Since they had just lost their Yorkie of three years, they were anxious to find a replacement. The Minnears discuss their story with Don Dare. Amy Minnear says her 2-and-a-half-year-old son Treyson really missed the family dog he had become familiar with. Treyson grew up with Solomon, a Yorkie who was about the sam...

Yorkie killed by pit bull at Lyons-Muir Island Fest

The death of a small dog is leaving a large hole in the heart of his owner. On Saturday night Fred Kobera was at the Lyons-Muir Island Fest in Lyons with his 11-year-old Yorkshire terrier, Teddy. The five-pound dog was sitting on the lap of Kobera’s girlfriend, Christy Eller, when Kobera went to help put on an event at the festival. Teddy started to follow Kobera. At the same time there was a person running by with a larger dog. The dog took Teddy in his mouth and shook him, according to Eller. The smaller dog died instantly. Eller said the dog was a pit bull and was on a leash, but turned around and attacked Teddy. She said the other dog’s owner didn’t attempt to stop the attack. “He didn’t do anything. He didn’t even apologize,” Eller said. “There was three ...

New Jersey couple had 276 dogs living in their home; SPCA to meet with prosecutors on charges

A New Jersey couple kept 276 dogs living in deplorable conditions in their home in the worst “animal hoarding” case in their county’s history, officials said. Ross Licitra, the executive director and police chief of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, will meet with prosecutors this week as investigators consider charges against the Howell Township couple, he said Sunday. The couple is cooperating with the review of the shocking discovery Thursday night at the two-story, 1,880-square-foot Bennett Rd. home, Licitra told the Asbury Park Press. SPCA investigators examined the house of the man and woman identified by the Pressas Charlene and Joseph Hendricks after an animal control officer from the Associated Humane Society responded to a report of a dog missi...

Yorkie Mauled, Killed by Unknown Dog in Owner’s Backyard: Police

Southington Animal control needs the public’s help searching for a dog that mauled a Yorkie and may be on the loose in town. Edward and Katherine Hayes said they are heartbroken over the loss of their nearly 2-year-old dog, Simon. Edward Hayes said he took Simon out in his back yard on Deer Run around noon Monday and a large black dog came into his unfenced yard. The unknown dog attacked and killed Simon. “He had him in his mouth and was shaking him (for) a couple minutes maybe? Before he let him go,” Hayes said. Hayes said he had to separate the animals and the dog who attacked Simon fled. The dog is described as possibly a Labrador/boxer mix, weighing about 100 lbs., black with tan streaks. “It’d be very dangerous if this dog is on the loose and no one knows who’s dog it is or wher...
