Crates full of puppies found in hot van at New Jersey Walmart

GARFIELD, N.J. — More than two dozen puppies were rescued from a van parked outside the Walmart store in Garfield on Saturday, animal welfare officials said Sunday. The puppies had been flown into Newark Liberty International Airport from Colombia and were reportedly headed to Florida. The puppies, 26 French and English bulldogs, were left unattended in the van on a day when temperatures climbed into the low 90s. In neighboring Lodi, the high was 90 degrees, said Bob Ziff of the North Jersey Weather Observers. Animal welfare officials repeatedly caution pet owners that leaving animals in vehicles is extremely dangerous because temperatures rise very quickly. The Bergen County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals confiscated the puppies, which were crowded into just two crates i...

Puppy Found Wrapped in plastic bag is a Teacup Yorkie

Josh Miller was hurrying into the Fortinos supermarket at Lawrence Square Tuesday afternoon when he noticed there was something “yelping” from inside a nearby garbage can. As he approached the can, he realized the noise was coming from a plastic bag. At first, he thought it may have been a raccoon or a squirrel. “I saw that the bag was kind of moving,” Miller said in an interview. “I was a little freaked out.” He attempted to free the animal and found it was wrapped in five separate plastic bags, each one tightly knotted. It was around 3 p.m. on Tuesday — with the temperature nearing 30 C — and the bags felt “boiling hot.” Once Miller tore through them, he found a three-month old Yorkshire Terrier inside. The female puppy was dehydrated, on t...

Calif. Couple Accused of Hoarding 180 Yorkies Pleads Guilty

A Poway couple, found with almost 200 Yorkie dogs inside their homes and a restaurant were sentenced Tuesday. Christine Calvert, 62, and Mark Vattimo, 73, were placed on three years of felony formal probation for animal neglect. As part of the sentence, they were ordered not to have dogs for 10 years, said prosecutors. Calvert was also ordered to continue counseling. In January, the Humane Society received a report from a concerned veterinarian that suggested the Poway couple was keeping 180 dogs in deplorable conditions. The dogs were kept in dark, unsanitary rooms filled with feces, urine, and mice at the defendants’ homes. The couple was charged with 10 felony counts, including animal abuse and neglect, and one count of resisting an officer. Calvert and Vattimo previously pleaded ...

Abandoned puppy with broken legs found at Pittsburgh animal shelter is recovering after surgery

An 11-week-old old Yorkie puppy is recovering from surgery after being found abandoned with two broken legs at the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society on the North Side. Pins were inserted into the dog, now named Laney, to help her legs heal. Officials said the type of break she suffered is typical of a jump or a fall. Dr. Anthony Pardo, who performed the surgery, said Laney will wear splints for four to five weeks. “During that time, she’s going to be crate-confined, have bandage changes, and hopefully she will be adoptable after that,” Pardo said Thursday. Anyone who wants to adopt Laney should contact the Humane Society at www.wpahumane.org or 412-321-4625. Laney was coming out of sedation when she was found Tuesday, according to the shelter. Officials believe the type...

Pit bull-mix mauls 79-year-old man, kills Yorkie in Palm Coast

A pit Labrador/bull-mix killed a Yorkshire terrier and mauled a 79-year-old man after breaking free from its owner outside a Central Florida apartment complex. The Daytona News-Journal reported that Helena and Neel Karnani told Flagler County sheriff’s deputies they were walking their 2-year-old pit bull mix, named Wilson, through a parking lot Sunday when the dog ran off. A deputy’s report said Neel Karnani tried to capture Wilson, but the dog continued to run and “work himself up.” The dog charged James Bennett and his dog, Gidget. Bennett tried to fight off the dog, but he was knocked to the ground, officials said. Wilson then attacked Bennett’s dog, deputies said. Bennett was taken to a hospital for treatment. His 7-year-old service dog died at the scene. ...
